The eŒect of probabilistic phonotactics on lexical acquisition

چکیده
The eŒect of probabilistic phonotactics on lexical acquisition in typically developing children was examined to determine whether a lexical or sublexical level of language processing dominates lexical acquisition. Sixty-one normally achieving 7, 10, and 13 year-old children participated in a word learning task, involving non-words of varying probabilistic phonotactics. Non-words were presented in a lecture format and recognition memory was tested following a 7 minute ® lled delay. Results showed that 10 and 13 year-old children recognized more high probability non-words than low probability non-words. In contrast, 7 year-old children showed no consistent eŒect of probabilistic phonotactics on lexical acquisition. These ® ndings suggest that the sublexical level of processing dominates word learning during the initial phases in older children. This, in turn, raises questions about the mental representations ofwords and the eŒect of phonological knowledge on lexical acquisition in young children. Implications of these ® ndings for children with speci® c language impairment (SLI) are discussed.

Sublexical Influences on Lexical Development in Children
Previous experimental research has found that adults and infants are sensitive to the likelihood of occurrence of sequences of segments, or probabilistic phonotactics, in the ambient language. One hypothesis that emerges from this finding is that probabilistic phonotactics, a sublexical factor, may influence rate of lexical acquisition. Preliminary results are reported from a study involving 21...
متن کاملThe eŒects of age-of-acquisition and frequency-of-occurrence in visual word recognition: Further evidence from the Dutch language
It has been claimed that the frequency eŒect in visual word naming is an artefact of age-of-acquisition: Words are named faster not because they are encountered more often in texts, but because they have been acquired earlier. In a series of experiments using immediate naming, lexical decision, and masked priming, we found that frequency had a clear eŒect in lexical tasks when age-of-acquisitio...
متن کاملPhonotactics, density, and entropy in spoken word recognition
Previous research has demonstrated that increases in phonotactic probability facilitate spoken word processing, whereas increased competition among lexical representations is often associated with slower and less accurate recognition. We examined the combined effects of probabilistic phonotactics and lexical competition by generating words and nonwords that varied orthogonally on phonotactics a...
متن کاملPhonotactics: a Review
Probabilistic phonotactics refers to the relative frequencies of segments and sequences of segments in spoken words. Neighborhood density refers to the number of words that are phonologically similar to a given word. Despite a positive correlation between phonotactic probability and neighborhood density, nonsense words with high probability segments and sequences are responded to more quickly t...
متن کاملThe recognition of Japanese-accented and unaccented English words by Japanese listeners
This study investigated whether Japanese listeners learning English employ two types of lexical information (word frequency and neighborhood density) when they recognize English words. English words recorded by a native speaker of English and a native speaker of Japanese were presented to Japanese university students in a noise condition. The results of word recognition scores showed that Japan...
